Human Resources Intern

Are you interested in building a career in Human Resources and gaining hands-on experience in a mission-driven organization? The Summit Area YMCA is seeking a Human Resources Intern to support our HR team with projects that enhance employee communication, engagement, and operational efficiency.

This internship offers the opportunity to learn how HR supports a large nonprofit workforce while gaining practical experience with HR systems, employee communications, records management, and organizational initiatives that support our staff and strengthen our community.

What You'll Do:

  • Assist with the development and administration of employee surveys, including new hire surveys, post-employment surveys, and the annual employee engagement survey.
  • Support the creation of curated HR and benefits communications, including development of an interactive benefits guide.
  • Help tailor HR communications for different employee groups including full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff.
  • Support HR records digitization projects.
  • Scan, organize, and name employee documents following HR team review.
  • Upload approved documents into employee profiles within our HR Information System (HRIS).
  • Follow document retention standards, naming conventions, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Assist with general HR administrative tasks and special projects.
  • Help prepare HR training materials and resources.
  • Participate in HR learning opportunities to gain exposure to HR operations and best practices.
  • Provide additional support to the HR team as needed.

Salary & Benefits

Pay for this role is $20.00 per hour. This is a seasonal position for Summer 2026, scheduled for 8-10 weeks at approximately 20-25 hours per week (JuneAugust).

Seasonal employees at the Summit Area YMCA receive a complimentary YMCA membership during their employment.

Internship Program Information

This internship is funded through the New Jersey Career Accelerator Internship Grant Program, an initiative designed to support paid internship opportunities for college students and recent graduates across New Jersey.

Candidates selected for this internship may be asked to provide additional information required by the program to confirm eligibility.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed coursework in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, Communications, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when working with employee information.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Systems.
  • Comfortable learning new systems and technology (HRIS exposure a plus).
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while following guidance and meeting deadlines.
  • Previous administrative, office, or internship experience is a plus but not required.

Career Accelerator Internship Grant Program Eligibility

  • Current NJ undergraduate student
  • Current NJ graduate student
  • Recent NJ college graduate: must have graduated less than one year prior to start of the internship experience (May 2025-May 2026 graduates)
  • A current undergraduate student who is a permanent NJ resident
